Chapter 4

The Tribunal of the Waters

Every Thursday at noon, eight farmers in black smocks sit outside the Apostles' Door of Valencia Cathedral and settle the week's water disputes. No lawyers speak, nothing is written down, and the ruling is final.12

The síndics are elected by the irrigators of each canal for two-year terms. A síndic whose own canal is party to a dispute must leave his chair, and the remaining seven decide.

Books, papers, archive scans, interviews. Loggia reads every page, transcribes the audio, and keeps page numbers so quotes stay checkable.

  2. When did the court first appear in writing?

Three of your sources agree on 1321, a municipal ordinance naming the síndics. One argues for 1239.

It writes in the margin, never over you.

Loggia reads your draft the way a good editor would. It flags claims without sources, finds counter‑evidence in your own library and notices when you repeat yourself. Nothing enters your text until you accept it.

Needs a source

Three sources date this to 1321. None of them say “founded”.

You said this in §2

Same point, nearly the same words, on page 31.

Shared Water · 112

The tribunal is often described as founded in 960 under the Caliphate, a date that appears in every guidebook and in no document. What can be shown is narrower and more interesting. By 1321 the city already treated the court as old, and it named the síndics in an ordinance as if everyone knew who they were.

Its authority rested on something other than law. The farmers obeyed because the alternative was worse: a canal that runs dry for one is soon dry for all.

Water, in the huerta, was never private property in the ordinary sense. It belonged to the land, and the land belonged to the canal.

When the court did act against a powerful man, as in the Rovella case of 1894, it acted quickly and quietly.

Counterpoint

Ibarra reads compliance as social pressure, not fear of drought. See her 2021 field notes, p. 88.

Unclear

“Quickly” compared to what? The ruling took 3 sessions, per the minutes of 9 May 1894.

  • Needs a source Claims that nothing in your library supports.
  • Counterpoint Evidence from your own sources that cuts the other way.
  • Repetition Points you have already made, with the page.
  • Unclear Vague words a reviewer would circle.

Every sentence knows where it came from.

Cite while you write with a keystroke. Loggia matches the quote to the page, builds the bibliography as you go and reformats the whole book when your publisher changes its mind.

Plus 9,000 CSL styles, footnotes or endnotes, and a check that flags any quote that no longer matches its source.

By 1321 the city already treated the court as old, and its rulings were obeyed even by the cathedral chapter.

    Questions, answered.

Does Loggia write my paper for me?

No. It reads, finds, checks and annotates. Text enters your draft only when you accept a note, paste from a thread or type it yourself. Every accepted suggestion is marked in the version history.

Where do thread answers come from?

Only from the sources in your library or the collection you pick. Each sentence carries its page. If nothing in your library answers the question, Loggia says so instead of guessing.

    Which files can I import?

PDF, EPUB, Word, Markdown, web pages, DOIs and ISBNs, scanned images (with OCR in 40 languages), audio and video (transcribed), Zotero libraries and BibTeX files.

    Which citation styles are supported?

Chicago (notes and author‑date), APA 7, MLA 9, Harvard, IEEE, Vancouver and more than 9,000 CSL styles. Switching styles reformats the whole document and its bibliography.

    Can I work offline?

Yes, drafts and your library open offline on the desktop app and sync when you reconnect. Reading new sources and asking threads need a connection.

How does Studio billing work for a lab?

One invoice for the group, seats added or removed any month. Reviewers who only comment are free.
